The webinar on, 'Advancing Engagement between India and Europe on Business Responsibility and Sustainable Development', will discuss emerging legal and policy frameworks on business operations across supply and value chains. It will consider the challenges, opportunities, and the road ahead for ensuring the human rights of all are respected and protected. Date: 22 January 2021 Time: 2:00-4:00 pm (IST); 9:30-11:30 am (CET) BACKGROUND AND CONTEXT Amidst the global crisis, significant developments are taking place in India and Europe in areas of business responsibility, transparency and accountability. Following the National Guidelines on Responsible Business Conduct (NGRBC) in 2019, India is currently developing its National Action Plan (NAP) on business and human rights that articulates the government's priorities and actions to protect against adverse human rights impacts by business enterprises. Simultaneously, national governments in Europe are deliberating national laws that mandate companies to conduct human rights due diligence (HRDD) in their supply chains— the referendum on corporate accountability law in Switzerland and the ongoing debate on a national supply chain law in Germany. Moreover, the European Commission has committed to introduce a mandatory HRDD law in 2021 while negotiations advance at the UN Human Rights Council with a second revised draft for an international legally binding instrument on Transnational Corporations and Other Business Enterprises with respect to human rights.
