CJI B R Gavai Unveils Portrait Of Amarendra Sharan; SCBA Dedicates e-Library Section In His Honour

On May 16, 2025, the Chief Justice of India, Justice B. R. Gavai unveiled a portrait of Late Mr. Amarendra Sharan, Senior Advocate in Library 1 in the Supreme Court at a ceremony organised by the Supreme Court Bar Association (“SCBA”). The ceremony also marked the naming of a section of the Library as the “Amarendra Sharan e-Library” after twenty-five new desktops, donated by the family of Late Mr. Sharan, were installed therein for the use and convenience of advocates.The event was attended by Justices of the Supreme Court, Justice Surya Kant, Justice J. K. Maheshwari, Justice Sanjay Karol, Justice Rajesh Bindal, Justice Aravind Kumar, Justice K.V. Viswanathan, Justice N. Kotiswar Singh, and Justice Joymalya Bagchi - as well as Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, President of the SCBA and other members of the SCBA Executive. Speaking on the occasion, Chief Justice Gavai recalled that Mr. Sharan was one of the lawyers who impressed him within a short period after his Lordship's elevation to the Supreme Court in May 2019. Remembering Mr. Sharan as having a “smiling face”, “pleasant court etiquettes and manners”, and as someone who was regarded as “a very helpful person” and as a fine human being by members of the Supreme Court bar. The CJI also praised the initiative of equipping the Library with new computers for use by advocates of the Supreme Court as a befitting tribute to the memory of Late Mr. Sharan. Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, President of the SCBA, remarked that it was felicitous that the portrait of Late Mr. Sharan, who he described as a having a “heart of gold”, was being inaugurated by Chief Justice Gavai - who is widely regarded as a “people's Chief Justice” and as an exceptionally considerate judge. Mrs. Madhu Sharan, wife of Late Mr. Sharan reflected on Mr. Sharan's commitment to help underprivileged clients and to guide and support juniors at the bar and described the inauguration of the e-Library as a “dream come true”. Mr. Sharan passed away on August 12, 2019 due to a sudden cardiac arrest. He served as the Additional Solicitor General for India between 2004-09. Of note, he successfully defended the Constitution (Ninety-third Amendment) Act, 2005 which enables reservations for SCs, STs, and OBCs in higher educational institutions. He also appeared in several high-profile criminal appeals, including appeals relating to the 2G scam and the coal allocation scam. He was appointed as amicus curiae by the Supreme Court in the case seeking a fresh probe into the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi which was dismissed by the Court in March 2018.
