Gorakhpur Tragedy: Allahabad HC Constitutes Fact-Finding Team To Visit Hospital & Inspect Infrastructure [Read Order]

The Allahabad High Court, on Thursday, constituted a fact finding committee of the Secretary, Uttar Pradesh State Legal Services Authority, and directed it to visit Gorakhpur’s BRD Medical College and Hospital to take note of the infrastructure there.

It further directed the Secretary to visit the place where oxygen cylinders are stored, and examine the arrangements of supply of oxygen to different wards. Also, it demanded a list comprising qualifications of the Hospital’s resident as well as visiting doctors. The report has been directed to be submitted in a sealed cover on the next date of hearing.

“It is needless to mention that the Superintendent or In-charge Principal of the Hospital of the BRD Medical College, Gorakhpur, shall cooperate with the Secretary, Uttar Pradesh State Legal Services Authority and extend her all assistance for taking photographs and collecting information regarding facilities available in the hospital,” the Bench comprising Chief Justice D.B. Bhosale and Justice M.K. Gupta observed.

The direction comes weeks after than 60 children died at the hospital in a span of five days allegedly due to lack of liquid oxygen. The government has maintained that the children died due to medical causes, including Japanese Encephalitis.
