The Bombay High Court has agreed to hear an appeal against a single judge's order that restrained the release of the film “Shaadi Ke Director Karan Aur Johar”.
On 13 June 2024, the Court had restrained the release of the film and any promotional material finding a strong prima facie case that the makers made unauthorised use of filmmaker Karan Johar's name and personality.
On 07 March 2025, while refusing to lift the stay on the film, the single judge had noted that the makers of the film 'unauthorisedly' by using Johar's name and personality attributes in the title of their film had prima facie violated Johar's personality rights, publicity rights and also his right to privacy.
Today, a division bench of Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice MS Karnik agreed to hear the appeal filed by co-producer of the film Sanjay Singh.
The counsel for the producer stated that the film is a not a big-star film which could be released anytime to pull the crowd. He stated that for such films, the period of April-June is important and thus requested for the appeal to be heard.
The Court will hear the matter on April 15.
Case title: Sanjay S/o Girish Kumar Singh vs. Karan Johar also known as Rahul Johar
