Breaking | Humayun Kabir's AJUP Moves Calcutta High Court Over Alleged Large-Scale Post-Poll Violence In Murshidabad

Humayun Kabir-led Aam Janata Unnayan Party has approached the Calcutta High Court with allegations of large-scale post-poll violence which has taken place in the Murshidabad district of West Bengal.Polling in Murshidabad had taken place in the first phase of the Bengal Assembly Elections on 23rd April, 2026. The second phase of the polls were held on 29th April, and the results were declared on 4th May, 2026.The writ petition has been filed before a division bench of Chief Justice Sujoy Paul and Justice Partha Sarathi Sen.It has been alleged that “large-scale, systematic and politically motivated violence” had taken place in the aftermath of the 2026 West Bengal Legislative Assembly elections.According to the petition, incidents of targeted attacks, vandalism, use of explosives, and intimidation of political workers have taken place, leading to alleged violations of fundamental rights under Articles 14, 19, and 21.The petition states: “Such incidents… have resulted in gross violations of fundamental rights… including targeted attacks, vandalism, use of explosives and intimidation of political workers.”The immediate trigger for the plea was an incident dated April 23, 2026, where Petitioner No. 2 was allegedly attacked, his vehicle vandalised, and party workers assaulted.Crucially, the petition alleges that despite the seriousness of the incident, the police refused to register a complaint at Nowda Police Station.“The police authorities failed and refused to register a complaint, thereby demonstrating complete administrative inaction.”The plea further claims that such inaction continued even after the incident, with no effective steps taken to curb violence or ensure protection.The petitioners have sought urgent intervention of the High Court, including directions for an independent investigation into the incidents of violence, protection for affected individuals and political workers, and measures to restore law and order in the district.They argue that the State has failed in its constitutional obligation to maintain public order and safeguard citizens. “The State has failed in its constitutional duty to maintain law and order and protect citizens.”The case was listed as a new motion on May 5, 2026, before the Division Bench, and is yet to be taken up for hearing.Case: Aam Janata Unnayan Party & Ors. v The State of West Bengal & Ors.Case No: WPA(P) 208 of 2026
