The Calcutta High Court on Thursday adjourned the hearing of a petition filed by Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra seeking police protection in connection with alleged incidents of mob attack and egg-pelting against her, observing that an FIR has already been registered and protection had been granted earlier.

The matter came up before Justice Saugata Bhattacharya, and was argued by Senior Advocate Kalyan Bandopadhyay, appearing for Moitra.

Bandopadhyay submitted that the petitioner was repeatedly being targeted during her public engagements and that the police had failed to take adequate preventive measures.

"She is being humiliated and eggs are being hurled everywhere. Police is not taking any steps. She is not being able to discharge her duties as an MP," Bandopadhyay told the Court.

He urged the Bench to immediately grant protection to enable Moitra to carry out her public functions without fear of further attacks.

The Court, however, noted that protection had already been granted in the matter and that the State was seeking accommodation.

"Protection has been granted yesterday. State is seeking an accommodation," the Court observed.

Insisting on an urgent hearing, Bandopadhyay submitted that immediate intervention was still necessary.

The Court responded that an FIR had already been registered in relation to the incident and reiterated that protection had been provided.

"FIR is registered, protection has been granted," the Bench observed.

When Bandopadhyay requested the Court to hear him further, the Bench declined to take up the matter on an urgent basis.

"Since case has been registered, matter is not so urgent. You can wait for some time," the Court said.

The Bench thereafter adjourned the matter and directed that it be listed for further consideration on July 29.
