The Calcutta High Court on Monday declined to grant an urgent hearing to a plea alleging that Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra was attacked while visiting her constituency despite an earlier Court order directing security for her.

The plea was mentioned before Justice Saugata Bhattacharya, with counsel submitting that the Court had already ordered security for Moitra during her constituency visits, but an attack had nevertheless taken place, and there was a lack of security.

“Milord had ordered security for her while visiting, but there was an attack and a lack of security,” counsel submitted.

The Court, however, declined to accord preference to the matter, observing that it had already passed an order.

Earlier, the court had directed police escort for Moitra while visiting her Krishnanagar constituency, after allegations of egg-pelting and mob disturbance had been made.

Court had remarked that if an elected Member of Parliament is not secure while visiting her own constituency, then it may not bode well for regular persons with different political affiliations from the ruling dispensation.
