The Calcutta High Court on Thursday took note of HDFC Bank's clarification that it seeks to conduct in-person KYC of Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee at his residence before allowing operation of his personal bank account.

The matter arose from allegations that Banerjee's personal bank account with HDFC Bank had been frozen, affecting his ability to operate the account.

During the hearing, the bank clarified that the restriction was linked to completion of the KYC exercise and that its officials proposed to visit Banerjee's residence to undertake the process.

Justice Krishna Rao recorded the clarification and directed that all necessary documents be handed over to the bank. The Court also noted that the KYC exercise could be carried out by the bank on Thursday itself.

Senior Advocate Ayan Bhattacharjee, appearing for Banerjee, opposed the manner in which the bank had acted and argued that its conduct was "rife with high-handedness."

Bhattacharjee also sought imposition of costs on the bank, taking exception to the circumstances in which the account had allegedly been frozen and the subsequent requirement of an in-person KYC exercise.

The High Court has listed the matter on Monday for compliance.

The proceedings concern Banerjee's personal bank account and the issue of its operation following the alleged freeze. The Court, at this stage, has recorded the bank's explanation regarding the KYC requirement and directed the parties to complete the necessary compliance.
