The Central Government has cleared the appointment of nine advocates as Additional Judges of the Calcutta High Court, following their recommendation by the Supreme Court Collegium in May this year.

The nine advocates appointed are Aryak Dutt, Atarup Banerjee, Sandip Kumar De, Partha Pratim Roy, Sudip Deb, Anuj Singh, Arjun Ray Mukherjee and Rishad Medora. Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal announced the appointments on Friday.

The Supreme Court Collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, had recommended the nine advocates for appointment as Judges of the High Court at Calcutta at its meetings held on May 11 and 12, 2026.

The Collegium's resolution had stated: "The Supreme Court Collegium in its meetings held on 11th / 12th May, 2026 has approved the proposal for appointment of the following Advocates as Judges of the High Court at Calcutta."

The High Court has a sanctioned strength of 72 judges, comprising 54 permanent judges and 18 additional judges. As of May 1, 2026, it had a working strength of 42 judges, leaving 30 vacancies.

In March 2025, the Centre had appointed advocates Smita Das De, Reetobroto Kumar Mitra and Om Narayan Rai as Additional Judges of the High Court.
