CPM youth leader and former State assembly election candidate Dipsita Dhar has approached the Calcutta High Court alleging that manipulated and doctored videos of her speeches and public appearances are being circulated on social media with the intent to malign her reputation and spread misinformation.
According to the plea, Dhar has sought judicial intervention against the circulation of edited videos allegedly portraying her in a false light. She contends that portions of her speeches were selectively clipped and altered before being disseminated across various social media platforms, resulting in widespread trolling and reputational harm.
The matter was mentioned before Justice Saugata Bhattacharya by Dhar's counsel, seeking an urgent hearing. "Edited videos of my clients speech has been uploaded to cause unrest...she can be lynched any time..."
However, the court declined an urgent hearing and said, "No sorry, file it in regular course. No urgent leave."
The petition reportedly claims that the videos in question were not genuine recordings but edited versions designed to distort the context of her statements. Dhar has alleged that the circulation of such content amounts to a coordinated attempt to mislead the public and damage her political standing.
The plea seeks directions for the identification of the persons responsible for creating and disseminating the alleged doctored videos, as well as removal of the content from digital platforms.
Among the reliefs sought, the petitioner has reportedly requested appropriate directions for preservation of electronic evidence, investigation into the origin of the allegedly doctored videos, and steps to prevent further circulation of the disputed content pending adjudication of the matter.
