211 Knives Bought Online Seized, 677 Cases Lodged: Chhattisgarh High Court Sounds Alarm Over Unregulated Knife Supply

The Chhattisgarh High Court expressed concern over "alarming" number of knives purchased via e-commerce websites after the State submitted that it had seized 211 knives which were bought online and 677 cases were registered between January 1-June 30 this year.In an affidavit submitted by the Additional Chief Secretary, the Court was informed that a total of 211 knives purchased online were seized. Further, 12 pieces of spring button knives were seized from a shopkeeper and the required offence was registered against him, and further two persons possessing 10 spring button knives were apprehended in July and offences were registered against them also. "The sum and substance of the above affidavit shows that in the year 2024, total 1399 cases were registered under the Arms Act and 677 cases were registered during the period 01.01.2025 to 30.06.2025," a division bench of Chief Justice Ramesh Sinha and Justice Bibhu Datta Guru in its order noted. The afffidavit stated that between 01.01.2025 to 30.06.2025, total 32 cases relating to knife attacks have been registered and the accused persons have been apprehended. The court said:“The aforesaid data shows an alarming picture of the situation prevailing in the society, though the State appears to be taking adequate measures so that such dangerous weapons are not sold in open markets/online platforms and we further hope and trust that the State and its agencies would be more vigilant and take positive steps in curbing the aforesaid menace which would in turn help in reducing the crime relating to the Arms Act, in the society.”The high court had earlier taken suo-motu cognisance of a news report claiming unregulated availability of knives in paan shops, general stores and gift shops, which it states has contributed to increase in stabbing incidents across Bilaspur, directing the state to inform on steps taken to curb the same.The matter is now listed on 22.09.2025.
