The Delhi High Court has granted two weeks parole to a man, convicted in a murder case and sentenced to life, for attending his engagement ceremony and marriage.

Justice Amit Sharma allowed the plea moved by convict Rahul Dev who was convicted in 2014 for the offences under Section 302 (punishment for murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence or giving false information to screen offender) of the Indian Penal Code, 1860.

Dev was sentenced to life imprisonment in August 2014.

He moved the petition for being released on parole as his engagement and marriage were fixed for April 24 and 30 respectively in an Arya Samar mandir in the national capital.

The nominal roll received from Mandoli Jail stated that Dev was in custody for 14 years, 6 months and 25 days, with remission.

The court noted that the status report submitted by the jail stated that he was granted parole by a coordinate bench with effect from January 29 to Mach 05 and surrendered on time on March 06.

“In totality of the facts and circumstances, the present petition is allowed. The petitioner is granted parole for a period of two weeks…,” the court ordered.

The court directed the parole shall be counted from the date of the convict's release and asked him to surrender before the jail superintendent immediately on expiry of parole.
