Delhi High Court Seeks PWD Status Report On Renovation, Construction Of Toilets In District Courts

The Delhi High Court has sought a status report form the Public Works Department (PWD) regarding the progress of renovation or construction of toilets in the District Courts complexes in the national capital.Justice Sachin Datta was dealing with a plea filed by a woman lawyer highlighting the unhygienic conditions of female washrooms in the Lawyers' Chambers Block at Saket Courts.A status report was filed by PWD giving an update about the renovation work of toilets at Lawyers Block and Court Common toilets in the District Court Complexes at Saket and Dwarka.Regarding the Lawyers Block toilets in the Saket Courts, the status report said that the progress of toilet renovation was approximately 47% and the 90 number of toilets are likely to be completed by March 2026.On the Main Court Complex, the report also said that the physical progress of renovation work was approximately 20% and renovation work of 48 toilets is likely to be completed by March 31 next year.Regarding Dwarka Courts, the response said that the renovation work of one remaining toilet in the Court Building was in progress which will be completed by the end of September.About the Lawyers Block Chamber, it said that the overall renovation work of 16 toilets is likely to be completed by October. The concerned Executive Engineer (PWD) assured the Court that the work for renovation or construction of toilet blocks was being expedited and that all attempts were being made to complete the same as early as possible. The Court directed the PWD to ensure upkeep and maintenance of the existing toilets in the court complexes in question. “Let a status report be also filed as regards the work relating to renovation/ construction of toilets in the other court complexes as well. Let the same also be filed within a period of eight weeks from today,” the Court said.The matter will now be heard on December 11.Earlier, the Court bad directed immediate construction and repair work of washrooms in the district courts. A coordinate bench had said that the direction shall apply to male, female and handicapped washrooms in the District Courts to ensure a uniform standard of hygiene and functionality.Title: SMITA KUMARI RAJGARHIA v.
