Ramesh Chandana, one of the convicts in the infamous Bilkis Bano gangrape case, has filed a plea in the Gujarat High Court seeking parole to attend his niece's wedding.

This appeal follows the recent grant of parole to another convict, Pradip Modhiya, by the High Court on February 5. He was granted parole on account of his father-in-law's demise.

Chandana's lawyer, Khushbu Vyas, informed the court of Justice Divyesh Joshi that the wedding festivities are scheduled to commence from March 5.

In response, the court directed the registry to verify the matter and schedule it for hearing before the appropriate bench.

This development comes on the heels of Chandana and 10 other convicts surrendering at the Godhra sub-jail on January 21. Their surrender followed a Supreme Court order on January 8, which annulled the remission and premature release granted to them by the Gujarat government on August 15, 2022.

The convicts had been released by the Gujarat government in accordance with its 1992 remission policy, citing a May 2022 Supreme Court order in a petition filed by one of the convicts, Radheshyam Shah. However, Bilkis Bano challenged the state government's decision before the Supreme Court.
