Senior Advocate Yatin Oza has been elected as the President of the Gujarat High Court Advocates' Association (GHCAA) today. This victory marks his return to the helm of the body for the record 18th time. His 17th election was in 2019 and lasted until 2021.
Speaking to LiveLaw, Oza said : "The Bar did its duty; now it is my duty to work for the Bar. I can assure them that I will never let them down. I have always thought and acted in their favour, and this time around, my approach will be no different"
The election, held on Friday (December 19), saw a total of 2,185 votes polled. Sr Adv Oza secured a total of 969 votes. Other candidates contending for the post were: outgoing president Advocate Brijesh Trivedi, Babu Mangukiya, Darshan Shah and Chitrajeet Upadhayay.
In related news, Sr Adv Oza's appeal against the Gujarat High Court order of 2020, which convicted him for criminal contempt for levelling allegations of maladministration of justice against the High Court, is pending in the Supreme Court. The next hearing date is February 17.
Notably, the High Court had also revoked his Senior Advocate designation in July 2020. Against this, he appealed to the Supreme Court. In October 2021, the top Court temporarily restored his senior designation for 2 years.
As a result, the High Court restored Oza's senior designation vide a resolution passed on December 24, 2021. This temporary restoration was extended in January this year.
