An interlocutory application has been filed before the Kerala High Court seeking direction to the competent authorities to measure the land in the possession of the AKG Centre for Research and Studies and the CPI(M), alleging that a substantial extent of University of Kerala property is under their occupation.
The application is moved in a public interest litigation pending before the the Court preferred by Kerala University ex-Joint Registrar, challenging the assignment of the University's land to AKG Centre for Research and Studies in the year 1977.
According to the petitioner, the Government had originally granted 15 cents of land in 1977 for establishing a Research Centre. However, he alleges that the AKG Centre is presently in possession and enjoyment of approximately 55 cents, which allegedly includes portions of land belonging to the University of Kerala.
The petitioner contends that the additional extent allegedly occupied by the respondents forms part of the land assigned to the University by the Government.
Previously, it was informed to the Court that the Syndicate of the University of Kerala at its meeting held on July 13, 2026, has passed a resolution to measure the land in possession of the University. The Court subsequently took on record, the affidavits filed by the parties in this regard.
The petitioner submits that subsequent steps were initiated by the Revenue authorities to measure the disputed property and notices were allegedly issue to the concerned parties, including the AKG Centre, for measuring the land in its occupation.
However, the petitioner claims that the proposed measurement was resisted by the fifth respondent, eventually resulting in the withdrawal of the measurement proceedings insofar as the property in its possession was concerned.
The petitioner has thus approached the Court contending that a proper measurement of the property is necessary to ascertain the extent of land in possession of the respondents.
