The Kerala High Court on Monday (08 September) stayed the trial in the Puttingal Devi Temple Fireworks Tragedy Case.

Justice G. Girish issued the stay in a petition challenging the notification replacing the Special Public Prosecutor who was conducting the trial in the Additional Sessions Court - II, Kollam.

The Public Prosecutor has sought a short period to submit the government's explanation regarding the reasons for replacing the Special Public Prosecutor and to produce the relevant files before the Court.

The matter is now posted on 14 September.

The Puttingal Temple Fireworks accident took place in 2016 at the Puttingal Temple in Paravur, Kollam claiming more than 100 lives and injuring around 350 others. The accident also resulted in at least 150 houses in the area being damaged by the blast.

Pursuant to the accident, the Kerala High Court had in 2016 ordered that no noise making fire crackers can be used in any place of worship between sunset and the sunrise.
