The Madhya Pradesh High Court has issued show cause notices to YouTube and Facebook officials in a contempt petition filed against them alleging that the two internet companies failed to comply with the High Court's last month's order to remove objectionable posts against Hindu spiritual leader Acharya Dhirendra Krishna Shastri.

A bench of Justice Raj Mohan Singh issued notices to the respondents [Google LLC managing director Ishan Chatterjee, Google LLC (YouTube) resident grievance officer Suraj Rao, Facebook vice president and managing director Meta Sandhya Devanathan and Facebook resident grievance officer Meta Amrita Kaushik] on payment of process fee within seven working days. The notice has been made returnable within four weeks.

It may be noted that on December 4, taking action on a petition filed by one of the disciples, the High Court had given stringent directions to social media platforms such as X (formerly known as Twitter), Facebook, and YouTube to remove tarnishing content published about the Acharya Shastri.

The order was passed on the petition filed by one Ranjit Singh Patel alleging that the posts being circulated about the Acharya were not only defamatory but also tantamount to maligning the image of Peethadheeshwar of Shri Bageshwar Dham, Chhatarpur.

The counsel for the petitioner had also furnished certain posts and news articles about his Acharya in online and print media, that were allegedly derogatory.
