Makar-Sankranti Festival: MP High Court Orders Strict Implementation Of Chinese Manjha Ban

The Madhya Pradesh High Court, on Thursday (December 11), directed the Indore Police Commissioner and Superintendent of the adjoining district to ensure the strict implementation of the ban on the manufacture, sale, storage and use of Chinese Nylon Threat (Manjha). On December 8, the bench had directed the Registry to register a suo motu public interest litigation regarding the illegal sale and use of Chinese Manjha, which is causing injuries and casualties. On December 11, a mention was made stating that the illegal use of Chinese Manjha was prevalent in Indore as well as adjoining districts. In today's hearing, the Amicus Curiae submitted that the Makar-Sakranti festival, which will be celebrated on January 14, 2026, is one of the most celebrated kite-flying events. This leads to an increase in sales and use of Chinese Manjha, and therefore strict orders should be passed to implement a ban on the manufacture, sale, storage and use of the same. The counsel for the State was directed to submit their reply on the next date of hearing. The bench of Justice Vijay Kumar Shukla and Justice Binod Kumar Dwivedi directed; "As an interim measure, it is directed that Commissioner Police, Collector Indore, Collector and Superintendent of Police of adjoining districts i.e. Ujjain, Dewas, Dhar, Khargone, Badwani, Alirajpur, Jhabua, Mandsaur, Neemuch, Ratlam, Shajapur and Rajgarh are directed to ensure compliance of following:-"a. To ensure strict implementation of the ban on manufacture, sale, storage and use of Chinese Nylon Thread (Manja)b. The appropriate authority should conduct and monitor that the aforesaid thread should not be circulated in the market.c. The State authorities may be directed to undertake social awareness campaigns through print and social media for not using the Chinese Nylon Thread (Manja).d. The public at large should also be made aware with regard to the legal/penal consequences of the use and sale of the Chinese Nylon Thread (Manja)."The case is listed for December 12, 2025.
