Harbhajan Singh Not Residing In Punjab: State Tells High Court In Plea Challenging Withdrawal Of His Security Cover

The Punjab and Haryana High Court issued notice to Punjab Government on plea filed by former cricketer-turned Member of Parliament (MP) Harbhajan Singh challenging the withdrawal of security cover granted to him, alleging political vendetta and lack of due process.The petition seeks quashing of an order dated April 25, 2026, whereby Singh's security cover was withdrawn allegedly without any fresh threat perception assessment, notice, or opportunity of hearing.Advocate General for Punjab Maninderjit Singh Bedi submitted that Harbhajan Singh is not residing in Punjab and even affidavit filed with the plea is attested in Maharashtra.Justice Jagmohan Bansal without granting any interim-relief, issued notice to the State and listed the matter to May 12 and asked the State to ensure no physical harm is done to him or his family.Harbhajan Singh a sitting Rajya Sabha MP, contended that security had originally been granted in May 2022 following a proper review by State intelligence and security agencies.It was argued that the withdrawal was abrupt and coincided with his decision to leave the Aam Aadmi Party, suggesting that the move was politically motivated.Highlighting the urgency of the matter, the petitioner submitted that immediately after withdrawal of security, a mob allegedly attacked his residence in Jalandhar. It was further alleged that local police failed to intervene effectively during the incident.According to the plea, the situation escalated the following day, prompting intervention by the Ministry of Home Affairs, which deployed CRPF personnel for protection. However, the original State-provided security cover has not been restored.The petitioner also relied on a representation dated April 28, 2026 submitted to authorities seeking restoration of security, which, it is claimed, has not been acted upon.Title: Harbhajan Singh v.
