The Inter University Centre for IPR Studies (IUCIPRS), an autonomous institution established by the Government of Kerala at Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT), has announced a Refresher Course on Developmental Perspectives of Intellectual Property Law on the theme "Intellectual Property Rights, Access, and Justice", scheduled to be held from June 27 to July 3, 2026. The programme will be conducted in hybrid mode at the Conference Hall, IUCIPRS, and through Google Meet.
According to the organisers, the refresher course seeks to critically examine the relationship between intellectual property rights, access, equity, inclusion, and social justice in the contemporary knowledge-driven economy. The programme will explore how intellectual property regimes interact with concerns relating to access to medicines, technology, education, biodiversity conservation, traditional knowledge, digital copyright, open innovation, climate technologies, and equitable dissemination of scientific knowledge.
IUCIPRS stated that while intellectual property protection plays a crucial role in incentivising innovation, creativity, and investment in research and development, concerns continue to be raised regarding the impact of excessive proprietary protection on equitable access to knowledge and public welfare, particularly for vulnerable and marginalised communities.
The organisers noted that developing countries such as India face the challenge of balancing innovation incentives with social welfare objectives and developmental priorities. Against this backdrop, the course aims to facilitate discussions on how intellectual property systems can promote innovation while ensuring inclusivity, distributive justice, and sustainable development.
The programme will focus on the conceptual foundations of intellectual property rights and their relationship with access, justice, equity, and public interest. It will also analyse contemporary legal and policy issues relating to patents, copyright, trademarks, geographical indications, biodiversity, and traditional knowledge. The organisers further intend to encourage interdisciplinary engagement on the intersections between intellectual property, human rights, innovation, and access to justice.
Among its special features, the refresher course will include a session and hands-on training on the theme "access to health" led by Prof. Dr. Biswajith Dhar, (Retd Professor, Centre for Economic Studies and Planning (CESP) at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi in association with Experts from Third World Network.
The programme is open to faculty members of Law, Management, Social Sciences and Humanities, research scholars and doctoral candidates, legal practitioners, and policy researchers.
The registration fee has been fixed at ₹1,500 for offline participation and ₹1,000 for online participation. The last date for registration is June 24, 2026.
Interested participants may register through the Google Form provided by the organisers. For further information, participants may contact Dr. Kavitha Chalakkal or Dr. Simi K K.
