A team from Dr. B.R. Ambedkar National Law University, Sonepat (DBRANLU), comprising Yash Gupta, Priyanshi and Tushar, has won the 14th UFYLC Ranka National Moot Court Competition. In the final, the team defeated IIT Kharagpur (three-year LL.B. programme) before a bench of five judges:
- Prof. (Dr.) Amar Pal Singh, Vice-Chancellor, RMNLU
- Mr. J.K. Singhi, Senior Advocate
- Ms. Suruchi Kasliwal, Advocate
- Prof. (Dr.) Jitendra Mishra, former Head and Dean, Faculty of Law, [university name], Gorakhpur
- Mr. Sunil Samdaria, Advocate
The team received the winners' award of ₹51,000 at the valedictory ceremony, presented by Justice Mahendra Kumar Goyal, Judge, Rajasthan High Court.
The Moot Proposition
The problem, Azad Digital Foundation & Ors. v. State of Vayuvana & Ors., was set in a fictional State. It combined a writ petition under Article 226 of the Constitution with a criminal miscellaneous petition under Section 528 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023. The dispute arose from an adult satire show, a viral clip taken from it, and an AI-manipulated version of that clip. The State responded with an emergency takedown communication, an FIR and an arrest. The issues covered maintainability, intermediary liability under the Information Technology Act, 2000, protection of satire under Article 19(1)(a), and the legality of the criminal process.
The team said the moot challenged them to balance free speech against the harms posed by synthetic media. They said the preparation helped them develop arguments from first principles and defend them under rigorous questioning from the bench. The team also expressed gratitude to its faculty, mentors and the organisers for conducting the competition.
