The Institute of Military Law (IML), Shankar Vihar, Delhi Cantt, will celebrate its 36th Raising Day on May 16, 2026, commemorating over three decades of excellence in military legal education and training. Established on May 16, 1990, the Institute is one of its kind in the Asian region exclusively dedicated to the training and study of military law.

Functioning under the aegis of the Army Training Command and the Integrated Defence Staff for jointness of training, the Institute has conducted 181 courses since its inception and trained nearly 4,000 officers from the Army, Air Force, Navy and Coast Guard. It has also trained 96 officers from Friendly Foreign Countries, fostering professional excellence and inter-service legal understanding.

The Institute regularly organises seminars, workshops and academic interactions on contemporary and emerging legal issues, including the employment of Military Legal Advisers during operations. It also maintains a close academic association with the Delhi Judicial Academy through joint training programmes and collaborative engagements.

In furtherance of legal research and professional discourse, the Institute publishes the only Military Law Journal in Asia featuring landmark military law cases, judicial developments and scholarly articles on emerging issues.

Over the years, the Institute has hosted Judges of the Supreme Court and various High Courts, as well as Members of the Armed Forces Tribunal, Principal Bench, for lectures and academic interactions, enriching the intellectual environment of the Institute.
