Sweden Approves Law Lowering Legal Gender Change Age To 16

Sweden's parliament has recently passed a significant law altering the process of legally changing one's gender, lowering the minimum age from 18 to 16 and simplifying the procedures involved. The legislation aims to simplify the procedures involved in changing one's legal gender. Previously, the process could be lengthy and required a thorough investigation along with a doctor's diagnosis of gender dysphoria. Under the new law, the process is streamlined, with a shorter consultation with a medical professional or psychologist being sufficient. While individuals under the age of 18 can now legally change their gender, they still need approval from their parents or guardians, in addition to a doctor and the National Board of Health and Welfare. The law eliminates the previous requirement of a diagnosis of "gender dysphoria" for individuals seeking to change their legal gender. Gender dysphoria refers to the distress experienced by individuals whose gender identity does not align with their assigned sex at birth. The law distinguishes between legal gender change and surgical interventions for gender transition. While individuals can change their legal gender from the age of 16, surgical procedures for gender transition will remain restricted to those aged 18 and above, with additional evaluations in place. Other Countries Denmark has laws in place that allow individuals to change their legal gender through a relatively straightforward administrative process. Applicants must be at least 18 years old and provide a declaration of gender identity. Norway permits individuals to change their legal gender through a self-determination process without requiring medical or judicial approval. Applicants must be at least 16 years old. Finland passed a law in 2002 allowing individuals to change their legal gender. The process involves submitting an application to the Digital and Population Data Services Agency and does not require medical intervention. Spain introduced a law in 2007 that allows individuals to change their legal gender without undergoing medical or psychological treatment. Applicants must be at least 16 years old and obtain a certificate from a healthcare professional. Scotland passed legislation in 2022 allowing individuals aged 16 or older to change their gender designation on identity documents by self-declaration.
