    A division bench of Allahabad High Court comprising Chief Justice Govind Mathur and Justice Vivek Varma assembled today, despite the national holiday on account of Gandhi Jayanti, to hear a habeas corpus petition filed on behalf of a missing soldier.

    Treating a letter addressed to Chief Justice Mathur as a habeas corpus petition, the bench sought appearance Command Officer, Military Police, Police Station Cantt, Bareilly in the missing persons' case of Rajat Singh, Sepoy.

    The letter was sent by one Updesh Singh, who alleged that Singh was serving at 28 Punjab Regiment, Pithoragarh when he was illegally deputed with Colonel (Retd.) A. K. Dubey at Bareilly and went missing on July 28 last year from the Head Quarters, UB Area, Officers Mess, Bareilly.

    He further submitted that he lodged an FIR in this regard on July 30 this year but, in vain. Incidentally, AGA Syed Ali Mortaza submitted that the IO had requested the aforesaid Command Officer to instruct one Balwant Singh, to report at Police Station concerned for necessary interrogation but no response to the same had been given.

    In view thereof, the bench called call upon the Command Officer concerned to provide all necessary details with regard to Rajat Singh and posted the matter for October 14.
