The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday directed the state government to ensure, at the earliest, to the best of their ability the payment of wages to the workmen of the jute industry.

The Chief Justice-led bench was hearing a PIL where the anxiety of the petitioners was that the workmen in the jute industry are not receiving their wages.

The bench required the State Government acting through the Labour Commissioner or any other authorized principal officer including the Principal Secretary of the department to take up the matter in right earnest and enter into a meaningful dialogue with the concerned jute industry people and ensure to the best of their ability the payment of wages to the workmen of the jute industry.

"It is expected that the State Government shall play a positive and proactive role in this matter generating requisite motivation", observed the division bench.

Asserting that the Court is "conscious of the difficulty that the workmen in the jute industry are facing due to non payment of their wages", the bench urged "Let this exercise be taken up immediately and in right spirit".
