High Court of Andhra Pradesh at Amaravati has passed an interim order for inclusion of fish and shrimp (prawns) in the category of "essential supplies" and directed the State authorities to permit vehicles transporting the same.

A petition had been filed seeking permission for transportation of fish and shrimps (prawns) by including the same under 'essential supplies' in view of the letter dated 24.03.2020 addressed by the Joint Secretary of Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying to the Chief Secretaries of all States and Union Territories.

The Chief Justice of the Andhra Pradesh High Court at Amaravati, J.K. Maheshwari, observed that aqua-culture being one the of the businesses in the State of Andhra Pradesh was getting impeded due to the nationwide lockdown which had been imposed in order to curb the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19).

Accordingly, the Court passed an interim order, directing "that the vehicles transporting fish and shrimp (prawns) may be permitted by the State authorities by directing the concerned until the next date of listing, including the same under 'essential supplies' subject to such conditions, if any, they want to impose".

Matter is now listed after three weeks.
