The Delhi High Court recently disposed of a petition seeking appointment of more number of Judges in the institution, so as to ensure that its benches function with full strength.

The Bench of Chief Justice DN Patel and Justice Jyoti Singh observed that the process, both by way of direct appointment and promotion, is already underway.

    It said:

"Appointments to the Delhi High Court are both from the Delhi Higher Judicial Services as well as directly from the Bar. Since the process of recommending names for direct appointments is underway, we see no reason to pass any further order in the present petition, in that regard, at this stage."

The Court was also of the view that there are procedures in place for the purposes of appointment from Delhi Higher Judicial Services and that steps shall be taken to ensure filling up of the vacancies as expeditiously as possible.

"Some names have already been recommended and are pending consideration. In our view, the grievances raised in the petition stands satisfied, at this stage," the bench added.

The plea also sought directions to send full records for rejection of seniority list on merit to Supreme Court and the persons concerned.

Directions were also sought for appointment of more number of Judges to the High Court by way of promotion from the Delhi Higher Judicial Services.

During the course of hearing, the Petitioner, CA Rakesh Kumar Gupta, appearing in person, drew attention of the Court towards the reduction in number of Benches and also increase in pendency of cases.

However, the Court disposed of the petition with the above mentioned discussion.

Recently, Justice Yashwant Varma and Justice Chandra Dhari Singh sworn in as judges of the Delhi High Court.

The Central Government had, earlier this month, notified the transfer of 15 High Court judges, including the two. Both Justice Chandra Dhari Singh and Justice Yashwant Varma were earlier serving as judges of the Allahabad High Court.
