Expeditiously Appoint ASHA Workers For Chilla Khadar Locality: High Court Directs Delhi Govt

The Delhi High Court has directed the Union of India and Delhi Government to expeditiously conclude the process of appointment of ASHA workers in Chilla Khadar locality on the Yamuna bank. Around 4250 people live there in hutments. A division bench of Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Subramonium Prasad said that the appointment process be concluded as expeditiously as possible, preferably within six weeks. The court was hearing a plea seeking appointment of two trained ASHA workers or health workers for distribution of medicines in the Chilla Khadar locality. The plea filed by one Chhote Lal also sought direction on the respondents to provide a list of vacancies of all ASHA workers in the national capital and a time-bound plan for filling up the posts.The affidavit filed by Union of India and Delhi Government in 2016 stated that an ASHA worker was selected for the locality and the second worker was to be selected by mid of February that year.The response also said that the area was covered by a mobile van, operating from a Maternity Home in city’s Patparganj area, under the supervision of one Doctor and one ANM on Tuesdays and Saturdays.The counsel appearing for the petitioner submitted before court that both the ASHA workers have been appointed in respect of the locality. It was requested that the plea may be disposed of with a direction to the respondents that in case the ASHA workers have not been appointed yet, the same may be done as expeditiously as possible, in view of the vacancies shown in the affidavit. “In light of the aforesaid, the instant petition is disposed of with a direction to the Respondents to conclude the process of appointment of ASHA workers, if the same has not been done, as expeditiously as possible, preferably within a period of six weeks from today,” the court said.
