In a significant move to dispose of pending cases expeditiously, the Chief Justice and Judges of the High Court of Gujarat have directed the Principal District Judges of the State to entrust Civil Cases to Chief Judicial Magistrates in their respective districts.

A notification in this regard was issued on Sunday (29/01/2023) by the Registrar General of the High Court. It reads thus:

Entrustment of Civil Cases to Chief Judicial Magistrates.

With reference to the subject noted above, I am to state that Hon'ble the Chief Justice and Hon'ble Judges of the High Court of Gujarat have been pleased to direct you to entrust Civil Matters to Chief Judicial Magistrates in your District considering the pendency.

I am therefore to request you to be so good as to comply with the aforesaid directions issued by Their Lordships scrupulously.”

It is important to note that the Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court, Aravind Kumar has, in the past few days, stressed the speedy disposal of pending cases.

Recently, he expressed his displeasure over the fact that certain cases are pending for more than 30 years before the High Court.

In fact, while hearing a case which was pending for over 25 years, he had orally said that if cases will remain pending for long before the Courts, then the people would lose faith in the system.

Significantly, in his address to the public on the occasion of Republic Day, he said that the Judges at all levels should take a pledge to dispose of all the old cases which are pending for a long so that litigants get quick, fast, and speedy justice.
