Jaipur-Mumbai Train Firing: Accused RPF Constable Remanded To Police Custody Till August 7

Railway Protection Force (RPF) constable -Chetan Singh (33) - accused of shooting his senior and three others on board the Jaipur-Mumbai Central Superfast Express early Monday was remanded to police custody till August 7, 2023.The order was passed by Magistrate Shivdutt Malikarjun Patil at Metropolitan Magistrates Court, Borivali.The media was not allowed to witness the proceedings.Singh allegedly fired 12 rounds from his automatic service rifle allegedly killing passengers Asgar Abbas Ali (48) and Abdul Kadar Mohamed Hussain Bhanpurwala (64). The identity of the third passenger is yet to be ascertained.Singh apparently first shot and killed his senior sub-Inspector (ASI) Tikaram Meena (57), a tribal, before targeting the passengers. The incident took place at approximately 5 am when the train was near Palghar Railway station, just outside Mumbai.According to officers present in Court, the Assistant Public Prosecutor submitted that the offence was serious, it was committed in a running train. Moreover, the accused was a public officer and his duty is such that he has a gun. The victim's bodies are in the police's custody. The prosecution sought 7 days of police custody and was granted that time. He further submitted that it was important to know who were the passengers.Significantly it was the Investigating officer's contention that the accused may have medical conditions and investigation was on regarding that aspect as well. The prosecution, according to sources, claimed that the pellets also needed to be collected and sent for forensic investigation.
