    President of India Ram Nath Kovind appointed Justice NV Ramana as the Executive Chairman of National Legal Services Authority with effect from November 27, 2019.

    On Friday, Justice Ramana visited the NALSA office in New Delhi and issued a vision statement enumerating the future course for NALSA emphasising on increasing access to legal services in the country. He also met and interacted with Sunil Chauhan, Director of NALSA.

    Previously, Justice Ramana, who is the second senior most judge in the Supreme Court after Chief Justice SA Bobde, held the office of Chairperson of the Supreme Court Legal Service Committee (SCLSC). During his tenure, nearly 1545 cases have been filed by the SCLSC.

    NALSA was constituted under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987 to provide free Legal Services to the weaker sections of the society and to organize Lok Adalats for amicable settlement of disputes.

    As per NALSA's website, they are is laying a great deal of emphasis on legal literacy and legal awareness campaign. Almost all the State Legal Services Authorities are identifying suitable and trustworthy NGOs through whom legal literacy campaign may be taken to tribal, backward and remote areas in the country. NALSA is also keen to develop and promote a culture of conciliation instead of litigation in the country so that the citizens of this country prefer to resolve their disputes and differences across the table in a spirit of goodwill and brotherhood.
