Additional Sessions Court of Neyyattinkara while giving death penalty to Greeshma for the offence of murdering her boyfriend Sharon Raj observed that the convict is beyond reformation as she “ actively sought to prolong the victim's suffering, designed to cause extreme pain before death.”.

As per the case, Greeshma to get out of the romantic relationship with her boyfriend planned to murder him and gave him a kashayam (an ayurvedic concoction) laced with herbicide. It is alleged that she resorted to this as her marriage was fixed with another person and the victim was not backing off from the relationship. Sharon was admitted in hospital for 11 days, while he underwent intense pain and his organs failed one after the other. Before he died, he told his father that he had gone to Greeshma's house and there he was given a kashayam to drink. On the 11th day after the incident, Sharon died at the hospital.

The brother of the deceased also gave evidence to the effect that even after letting Greeshma know the accused was in hospital, she did not tell him what she gave to the deceased.

Greeshma killed Sharon inch by inch”, the Judge remarked.

When Greeshma was taken to police custody, she attempted to commit suicide by drinking Lysol in the bathroom of the police station. She was taken to the Medical College. While, she was in hospital, she gave the statement to the Magistrate. The Magistrate did not record the admission of guilt by the accused as it was a dying statement. However, the Sessions Judge considering the statements given by Greeshma to Magistrate to be a relevant fact, took into account that she stated to the Magistrate that she had mixed herbicide in the kashayam.

There was an earlier incident where Greeshma gave juice to Sharon to drink and Sharon vomited after drinking it. Evidence before the Court showed that Greeshma had searched in the internet about death by paracetamol overdose. The Court said that since this is the same modus operandi as the present crime, it can be concluded that this was also an attempt to murder the accused by mixing paracetamol in the juice.

The Court said that only a brutal mind can repeat the same offence against her boyfriend while in love and she being a repeated offender is not entitled to mercy.

The Court said the murder has sent a message in the society that a girl can easily kill her boyfriend after having broken their relationship. The Court added that it created panic among lovers and friends.

It gave a message that a lover cannot be trusted...Nowadays, the youths are following live in relationships . If it is viewed lightly, it is as good as use and throw and one can easily target his partner. It will send wrong message to society.

The Court also rejected the plea of the accused to give her lesser punishment considering her age. She was 24 when the incident occurred. The Court said that the accused and the victim were of the same age.

In addition to death sentence, Greeshma is sentenced to undergo rigorous imprisonment of 10 years for offences under Section 364, rigorous imprisonment of 5 years for offence under Section 328 of IPC and 2 years imprisonment for the offence under Section 203 of IPC.
