The Madras High Court on Monday clarified that its earlier orders extending the life of interim orders due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic shall not continue beyond July 15. The orders were passed pursuant to the initiation of suo moto proceedings by the Court in Re: Extension of Remand and Interim Orders.

A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy vide its earlier order dated June 29 had extended the life of interim orders until July 15.

The Bench noted that in light of the improvement in the current situation, the easing of the restrictions imposed by the lockdown and even the re-opening of the public transport system, life of interim orders need not be extended beyond the stipulated date i.e. July 15.

However the Court directed that the instant suo moto proceedings shall continue so that in case there is a further surge in Covid-19 cases and lockdowns, appropriate measures can be taken to protect the interests of litigants and further orders of the kind subsisting till July 15, 2021 may be issued to the extent necessary.
