The Punjab and Haryana High Court recently directed the Director-General of Police, Punjab to take a decision on the representation submitted by a lawyer seeking police protection alleging a threat to his life due to his action of raising a voice against 'open corruption' in the RTO department of the state of Punjab.

The Bench of Justice Manoj Bajaj was hearing the plea of a Lawyer-Editor, Tejinder Singh, and disposed it of with a direction to the DGP, Punjab, to examine the representation submitted by the lawyer and take appropriate decision in accordance with the law.

Essentially, Singh, in his plea, argued that being an Editor and Advocate, he raises his voice on the public issues regarding corruption in the Govt. departments and societies and that he keeps visiting different parts of the State with his campaign against corruption.

Further, he submitted that when he was visiting District Ludhiana and campaigning with regard to RTI and corruption, he was approached by several persons with regard to corruption in RTO Office, Ludhiana and therefore, he went to the office of RTO and found that there was open corruption going on in the department through the agents appointed by the officials especially a Clerk working on deputation.

Against this backdrop, he alleged that since he raised this issue before the higher authorities and had also got published news about the same in print media, he started receiving threats from bad elements.

In this regard, he submitted a representation to the DGP, Punjab seeking protection, however, since no action had been taken on it, therefore, he had moved the Court praying for issuance of necessary directions.
