The Kerala High Court on Tuesday expressed its astonishment and anxiety while referring to a recent incident where a man was hacked to death and his leg dismembered by 12 assailants in the State.

Voicing grave concern over the matter, Justice Devan Ramachandran orally remarked:

"People are chopping off someone's leg and throwing it on the road. This is scary. They (the assailants) are probably drug addicts and heavily into substance abuse. Where are we going like this as a State?"

The Court was adjudicating upon a matter where a batch of petitions was filed regarding land assignment to individuals belonging to the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in the State.

While considering the matter the Bench stated that although the State had proposed to provide housing to the people in these communities, measures to assure them a source of livelihood were missing.

It was pointed out that more than 50 lakh people from other States were working in Kerala, yet the citizens of the State were unemployed, leaving the younger generation vulnerable to take resort to crimes and drugs.

It was at this juncture that the Court mentioned the recent incident that had made headlines in the State. Reportedly, a man wanted in an attempt to murder case was hacked to death and his leg chopped off by a gang, four of whom have been taken into custody.

The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon when the assailants barged into the victim's house and chopped off his leg. He was rushed to the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College, but his life could not be saved, according to the police.

They later threw the dismembered limb on the road while fleeing from the spot. Subsequently, on Saturday night, four of them were arrested by police and are presently being questioned at Mangalapuram police station.
