Special Lok Adalat For 'Old Cases' Resolves 4,570 Cases Across Gujarat, Awards Worth ₹110 Crore Passed

A special Lok Adalat for old cases related to cheque dishonor, Motor Accident Claim Petitions, civil suits, land acquisition disputes, and matrimonial cases (excluding divorce) was organized across the state by the Gujarat State Legal Services Authority under the directions of Chief Justice Sunita Agarwal and the guidance of Justice Biren Vaishnav.
A total of 17,060 cases were taken up for settlement, out of which nearly 4570 cases were settled which includes 3,750 complaints filed under the Negotiable Instruments Act for cheque return, 120 Motor Accident Claim Petitions, 195 civil suits, seven land acquisition cases, and 498 matrimonial disputes.
Awards worth ₹110 crore were passed in the Lok Adalat. The Chief Justice had decided to hold a special Lok Adalat for specific categories of cases to facilitate amicable settlements and address case pendency. The initiative has received an overwhelming response.
Each conciliation bench consisted of one judicial officer and one trained mediator who worked for dispute settlement between the parties.
