    The Supreme Court Lawyers Welfare Trust (SCLWT) has taken a significant step towards recognizing and fostering young legal talent in the field of litigation at the Supreme Court of India through the establishment of the Justice J.S. Verma Fellowships. The Trust, founded in 2008 with a generous contribution from a prominent practicing Senior Advocate of the Supreme Court, is dedicated to supporting and enhancing professional opportunities and welfare initiatives for lawyers within the Indian Supreme Court.

    A key objective of the Trust is to encourage and support deserving young advocates aspiring to practice in the Supreme Court of India. This mission is embodied by Justice J.S. Verma Fellowships, which have previously been awarded to meritorious young lawyers.

    The Trust has been led by esteemed individuals, including Justice J.S. Verma and Justice Mukul Mudgal in the past. The current Chairperson of the Trust is Justice Aftab Alam.

    The Trustees, including Chander Uday Singh, Sadhana Ramachandran, Mamata Kachwaha, Gopal Sankaranarayanan, Raghenth Basant, Rahul Narayan, and Vrinda Bhandari, oversee the Trust's operations and initiatives.

    Eligibility

    Eligibility for the Justice J.S. Verma Fellowships is extended to lawyers who meet the following criteria:

    - Enrolled with any State Bar Council in India

    - Preference will be given to candidates who have completed a minimum of 2 years, and a maximum of 5 years practice in any court of India;

    - Non-litigation practice with law firms/individuals, judicial clerkships, and teaching assignments are excluded from the practice experience count

    - Willingness to commit to at least 2 years of practice at the Supreme Court of India if awarded the Fellowship

    Perks

    Each selected Fellow will enjoy the following benefits:

    - A monthly stipend of Rs. 30,000 for a period of 2 years during their Supreme Court practice

    Requirements

    Applicants interested in the Fellowship are required to submit the following documents via email to scwelfaretrust@gmail.com by 25th September 2023:

    - Copy of the candidate’s latest CV

    - A 1000-word essay highlighting the candidate's best case involvement or observation

    - A 300-word statement of purpose justifying the candidate's worthiness for the fellowship, focusing on socio-economic background and personal circumstances

    Selection Process

    The selection process involves a panel of Trustees shortlisting 15 candidates for the final round of interviews. The concluding interviews will be held in October 2023 by the Chairperson of the Trust along with a few other Trustees. Three candidates who stand out will be awarded the Justice J.S. Verma Fellowship, effective for a period of two years from the award date. All shortlisted candidates will be informed via email regarding the next steps.
