Supreme Court Warns Telangana's Planning Agency Of Contempt For Not Following Orders

On Monday, the Supreme Court came down heavily on the Kakatiya Urban Development Authority, Warangal, Telangana for not complying with an earlier Court order directing to grant land as part of a pension scheme to 318 workers of the Azam Jahi Mill Workers Association. KUTA is the urban planning agency of Warangal, Telangana. In 2021, the Court had directed both the KUTA and the Telangana government to consider the remaining 318 ex-employees of the Azam Jahi Mills at par with other 134 ex-employees, who were allotted 200 Sq. Yards of plots, free of cost, as per a 2007 Government Order. This was ordered to be completed in 6 months. Owing to the parties' lack of compliance of the 2021 order, a contempt petition was filed before the Court. During the hearing yesterday, a Bench of Justices MR Shah and CT Ravikumar took exception to the KUTA's conduct. "Supreme Court orders have to be followed! You comply with our order, from wherever you get the land. If you don't get the land also, comply with our order...We can't go on like this." On two earlier occasions, the KUTA had sought more time to comply with the court's 2021 judgment. "We are taking it very seriously. It is a question of not following our orders", the Bench cautioned. "I understand what your Lordships are saying. I am also an officer of the Court", Senior Advocate V Giri replied. "If our orders are not implemented, we know how to get them implemented. Never underestimate our orders!", the Bench said. The Court added that the State government must know the consequences when it doesn't comply with the Court's orders. "You tell them that the Court has indicated that the Chief Secretary will be summoned", the Court told Giri. According to Giri's request, the Court adjourned the matter to January 20.
