A Magistrate court in Kalyan on Tuesday (July 14) granted bail to Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction) corporator Ramesh Mhatre, who was arrested after being accused of assaulting two doctors in a civic hospital in Dombivli in Thane.
Judge KS Katkade granted bail to Mhatre on a surety of Rs 50,000.
Advocate Mujahid Qazi appeared for the Corporator.
A detailed order copy is awaited.
It is alleged that, Mhatre a sitting corporator in Dombivli, along with several of his associates, had on July 6, barged into a civic hospital and assaulted a female and a male doctor. His associates had assaulted the male doctor, a video of which went viral on social media. Post the incident, both the doctors have resigned from their service.
It is alleged that the reason for this sudden attack on the doctors was that a family had complained to Mhatre about the hospital staff asking them to take a newborn to another hospital as the NICU ward in their hospital was full and had no beds to accommodate the newborn. On this issue, Mhatre along with his associates, allegedly assaulted the doctors.
Following the incident, there was a huge public outrage on social media and subsequently, on July 8, Mhatre was arrested but due to his 'health condition' he was produced before the court virtually.
Thereafter on July 10, amid heavy police bandobast, Mhatre was produced before the court physically, where he was remanded to police custody for three days and subsequently sent to judicial custody.
