    An MP/MLA Court in Uttar Pradesh's Ghazipur District yesterday convicted former MLA Mukhtar Ansari in a Gangster Case registered by the State Police in 2010 after being accused of plotting a conspiracy to kill one Kapil Dev Singh, a teacher by profession, who was murdered in 2009.

    He has been sentenced to 10 years in jail and a fine of Rs. 5 lakh has also been imposed on him.

    Ansari, 60, is a former five-time MLA, who is presently lodged in the Banda district jail. This is his 6th conviction in the last 13 months. 

    In June this year, a Varanasi court convicted him in connection with the 1991 Awadhesh Rai murder case. Rai, a Congress leader and brother of Former MLA Ajay Rai, was gunned down in broad daylight outside Ajay Rai's house in Varanasi in 1991.

    In April this year, he was convicted in another Gangster Act case, lodged against him for his involvement in the kidnapping of Vishwa Hindu Parishad office-bearer Nandkishore Rungta in the year 1996 and also in the murder of Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Krishnanand Rai in the year 2005.

    In December last year, a Court in Uttar Pradesh's Ghazipur District convicted former MLA Mukhtar Ansari and his aide (Bhim Singh) in a 26-year-old Gangster Case.

    Earlier, in September last year, the High Court had convicted him in two cases. In one of the cases, the HC had found him guilty of intimidating a Jailer who was performing public duty by abusing him and pointing a revolver/pistol toward him, and threatening to kill him in the year 2003.

    In another case, the HC had convicted Ansari to 5 years in jail in connection with a 23-year-old case under the Uttar Pradesh Gangsters and Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act, 1986.
