    On May 27, the Uttarakhand government formed an expert committee for examining and implementing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state. The panel shall be headed by retired Supreme Court judge Ranjana Desai, who currently heads the Delimitation Commission of India.

    The other members of the committee include former Chief Justice of Sikkim High Court Permod Kohli, social activist Manu Gaur, retired IAS officer Shatrughan Singh, and Doon University Vice-Chancellor Surekha Dangwal.

    A notification in this regard was issued by the Home department on May 27 which reads thus:

    "To examine all relevant laws governing personal affairs of all citizens residing in the State of Uttarakhand and to report thereon along with draft law or amendments to existing law The Governor is pleased to approve the constitution of the following expert committee for examination and implementation of the applicable laws relating to marriage, divorce, property rights, inheritance and, adoption and maintenance and guardianship, etc. and Uniform Civil Code.

    1- Hon'ble Judge (Retd) Ranjana Prakash Desai Chairperson

    2- Hon'ble Judge (Retd) Permod Kohli Member

    3- Shri Manu Gaur, Social Worker Member

    4- Shri Shatrughan Singh, IAS (Retd) Member

    5- Smt. Surekha Dangwal, Vice-Chancellor Doon University Member"
