The Allahabad High Court on Tuesday issued notice on a PIL seeking timely appointment of members to the District Consumer Foras.

"Learned Standing Counsel may seek instructions and file a Counter Affidavit as to why appointments of members in the District Consumer Foras were not made in time, as to what is the status of the appointments as on date or the time frame within which appointments are likely to be made," the division bench of Justice Pankaj Mithal and Justice Yashwant Varma ordered.

The court was hearing a PIL filed by one Gurvinder Singh. He had submitted that most of the posts of members of the District Consumer Foras were lying vacant as fresh members had not been appointed subsequent to expiry of term of the previous members.

It was therefore prayed inter alia, that all the outgoing members be permitted to function till new appointments are made.

Though the court did not grant any interim relief, it directed the UP Government's Department of Consumer Protection to file its reply within three weeks.

The matter will now be taken up on July 23, 2020.

The Petitioner was represented by Senior Advocate Sushil Kumar Srivastava and Advocate Chheda Lal Verma.
