Actor Vijay's Party TVK Approaches Supreme Court Against Madras High Court Order In Karur Stampede Case

Tamil Actor Vijay's political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, has approached the Supreme Court challenging the Madras High Court's order which constituted a Special Investigation team to investigate the Karur stampede.The matter was mentioned before Chief Justice of India BR Gavai for urgent listing. CJI agreed to list the petition on Friday, when another connected petition - challenging the High Court's refusal to transfer the investigation to the CBI - is also listed.The petition has been filed through the party's secretary Aadhav Arjuna, TVK. They have sought an independent investigation under the monitoring of the Supreme Court. The party took objection to the Madras High Court constituting an SIT only with officers of the Tamil Nadu police.Alleging the possibility of a pre-planned conspiracy by miscreants behind the Karur stampede, the party argued that an independent investigation was necessary, which is unlikely if carried out by the State Police.The party also took exception to the critical remarks made by the Madras High Court against TVK and Vijay that they abandoned the place after the incident and that they did not express any remorse. The stampede, which occurred on September 27 at Karur, where people were waiting for Vijay's rally, claimed 41 lives.Condemning Vijay's attitude, the High Court observed :"This Court strongly condemns the conduct of Mr.Vijay, the organisers of the event and the members of the political party for fleeing from the scene of occurrence immediately after mishaps. While this Court is aware that the political party has not been arrayed as a respondent, it is important to point out that it is incumbent upon such a party to have taken immediate steps to rescue and assist individuals caught in the stampede like situation arising from the massive crowd in which many children, women, and several young person tragically lost their lives. Regrettably, there has been no statement, no expression of responsibility from the political party viz., Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam regarding the occurrence, either in their official twitter account or in other social media regretting the stampede that has taken place. There is no communication in any form or in any manner regretting the incident. This omission reflects the political party's disregard for human life and public accountability."
