CJI Nominates Justice JK Maheshwari As Chairman Of Supreme Court Legal Services Committee

The Chief Justice of India nominated Justice Jitendra Kumar Maheshwari, Judge of the Supreme Court, as the new Chairman of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee (SCLSC).

The appointment takes effect from 24 November 2025. A notification to this effect was issued on November 20 under Section 3A of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987.

The SCLSC plays a key role in providing free legal services to eligible litigants and in facilitating legal aid, representation, and access to justice before the Supreme Court. As Chairman, Justice Maheshwari will oversee the Committee's functioning, policy directions, and legal aid initiatives in alignment with the mandate of the Legal Services Authorities Act.

Justice Vikram Nath, who was earlier the Chairman of the SCLSC, has now been appointed as the Executive Chairman of the NALSA.

Justice Maheshwari, who has been serving on the Supreme Court bench since 2021, has previously held positions as Chief Justice of the Andhra Pradesh High Court and Judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
