The Supreme Court of India on Thursday directed the State Bank of India to not insist on granting the facility of scribe to only the candidates who had benchmark disabilities. The matter was heard by a bench comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice PS Narasimha.

The petition was filed by a specially abled candidate appearing for an exam for State Bank of India. At the very outset, CJI Chandrachud, while reminding the SBI of the judgement in Vikash Kumar v. UPSC stated–

"Are you going to deny this person a scribe because he doesn't have a benchmark disability?"

The counsel appearing for SBI, Advocate Sanjay Kapur stated that the SBI had provided the candidate with a letter stating that the SBI would consider his request for a scribe.

CJI DY Chandrachud, while dictating the order stated–

"We clarify that the respondent should not insist on a benchmark disability to grant facilities of a scribe."
