Chief Justice of India Surya Kant today rebuked Advocate Mathews Nedumpara for making reckless submissions and warned him that strict action will be taken if "he continued to misbehave."

During the mentioning round, Nedumpara mentioned a petition filed challenging the collegium system and seeking the restoration of the National Judicial Appointments Commission.

CJI Surya Kant said that there was no petition in the Registry. What Nedumpara said next displeased the bench. He said that when "Constitution Benches are being formed for Adani and Ambani, matters affecting the common man are not being heard."

A visibly upset CJI sternly warned Nedumpara: "Mr.Nedumpara, be careful with what you submit in my court. You have seen me in Chandigarh, in Delhi..I am warning you, be careful. Don't think you will be able to continue misbehaving as you have been doing with other benches. I am warning you."

In 2024, the Supreme Court Registry had refused to register Nedumpara's petition, saying that a fresh writ petition is not maintainable on an issue which was already decided by the NJAC verdict.

Last year, the then CJI Sanjiv Khanna had also pulled up Nedumpara when he had sought the listing of the petition. "Don't make a political speech in the Court," CJI Khanna had told him.
