Farmers Protest : Supreme Court Issues Notice To 43 Protest Leaders In Plea Against Road Blockade

The Supreme Court on Monday issued notice to 43 leaders of farmers organizations who are leading protests against the three contentious farm laws passed by the Parliament last year.The State of Haryana had filed the application to implead 43 farm leaders as additional respondents in a writ petition filed by a Noida resident against the road blockade at Delhi-NCR border as part of the farm protests.A bench comprising Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and MM Sundresh issued notice on Haryana's application to the proposed new respondents, and posted the petition for hearing on October 20.Leaders like RakeshTikait, Yogendra Yadav DarshanPal, Gurnam Singh etc are among the 43 persons sought to be added by State of Haryana.Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta, who appeared for the State of Haryana, submitted that the State has constituted a committee for holding talks and the protest leaders refused to come for a meeting which was called."Let notice be issued so that they don't say that they had no reason to come", the Solicitor General submitted. The bench agreed to issue notice. On September 30, while hearing the petition, Justice Kaul had made certain critical observations against the road blockade. Observing that highways can't be blocked perpetually, Justice Kaul had observed that that redressal should be sought through judicial forum or Parliamentary debates instead of street protests. The bench had adjourned the case to today after the Solicitor General sought time to implead the farmers organizations."Redressal can be through judicial forum agitation or parliamentary debates but how can highways be blocked and this cannot be a perpetual problem", Justice Kaul had remarked.Haryana Govt later filed an application to implead 43 farmers organizations and protest leaders like RakeshTikait, Yogendra Yadav DarshanPal, GurnamSingh etc.Earlier, the bench had observed that the Union and the Governments of Haryana, Delhi and UP had to find a solution to the road blockade.The PIL was filed by Monicca Agarwaal, a resident of Noida, who had alleged that travelling to Delhi from Noida for her marketing job had become a nightmare as it took 2 hours instead of 20 minutes for two weeks.
