Law Commission Of India Cautions Public Against Fraudulent Whatsapp Messages On Uniform Civil Code

The Law Commission of India has cautioned the general public against the fraudulent WhatsApp text, messages, and calls being circulated on the platform regarding the Uniform Civil Code. The Commission has clarified that it has no involvement or connection with any texts which are being circulated.In its disclaimer, the Law Commission has stated that there have been certain WhatsApp texts, calls, and messages being circulated pertaining to the Uniform Civil Code but the same have not been issued by the body. The disclaimer adds–"It has come to notice that certain phone numbers are rotating among the individuals, falsely associating them with the Law Commission of India. It is clarified that the Law commission has no involvement in connection with these texts, calls, or messages, and disclaimers any responsibility or endorsement thereof."It further adds that the Law commission of India communicates solely through its official channels, including its website and official publications. It also encourages individuals to visit the official website to access any public notice issued in regard of the Uniform Civil Code. Finally, it concludes–"It is here by urged that the public exercise caution in July on official sources for accurate information."On June 14, the Law Commission decided to re-open the debate on UCC by inviting fresh views from public at large and religious organizations.Those who are interested and willing may present their views within a period of 30 days from the date of Notice through “click here” button or email at membersecretary-lci@gov.in to the Law Commission of India. The concerned stakeholders are also at liberty to make their submissions in the form of consultation/ discussion/ working papers on any of the issues pertaining to the Uniform Civil Code to the “Member Secretary, Law Commission of India, 4th Floor, Lok Nayak Bhawan, Khan Market, New Delhi– 110 003.” If need be, Commission may call upon any individual or organization for a personal hearing or discussion.In 2018, the Law Commission of India released a Consultation Paper on ‘Reform of Family Law’, in which it opined that "formulation of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) is neither necessary nor desirable at this stage".The Law Commission of India cautions the people against the fraudulent WhatsApp text, messages and calls being circulated regarding #UniformCivilCode.
