Plea In Supreme Court Seeks Independent Investigation Into West Bengal Violence During Protests Against Waqf Amendment Act

Petitions have been filed in the Supreme Court seeking a court-monitored investigation into the violence which took place in Murshidabad in West Bengal during the protests against the Waqf Amendment Act 2025.
One petition has been filed by Advocate Shashank Shekhar Jha seeking the constitution of a Special Investigation Team to investigate the matter under the monitoring of the Court. The other petition has been filed by Advocate Vishal Tiwari seeking the constitution of a 5-member Judicial Enquiry Commission headed by a retired Supreme Court Judge for investigation.
The petitioners also urged the Court to seek a report from the State of West Bengal regarding the violence and also directions to ensure the protection of lives and properties of people. Directions are also sought to take action against provocative speeches made by persons.
As per reports, three persons were killed in the violence which took place in Murshidabad on April 13. The Calcutta High Court has ordered the deployment of Central Forces in Murshidabad district.
